Support in the kindergarten

Language support as an integrated principle

Language support is an established part of tasks in child care institutions (education framework plan), to assure that children are successfully accompanied and supported in learning one, two or more languages (see also: parents). Children at this age have of their own accord ideal prerequisites to acquire, develop and refine language/s.

Targeted, individual support

Children lacking up till now possibilities to sufficiently acquire the German language are supported in their language development in child care institutions by targeted, individual support. To determine whether a child shows a special need for added support, all children will be observed in a monitoring procedure at the latest 15 months before they start school (see province specific implementations by trained pedagogues to determine their language competency. The results serve as a basis to derive individually-tailored child-oriented support measures.

Initiating the education language German

Apart from developing language-communicative competency, the support specifically targets the acquirement of language structures, comprehensive vocabulary, as well as age-appropriate narrative skills. The provinces developed for this purpose individual models of language support.

Continuous monitoring of the language acquisition process

Language acquisition in general as well as German-language acquisition in particular is a continuous process with its own rules. The support interventions are aligned to that, for neither adoption of German as the primary language nor that as the second (third) language-German stops with kindergarten. Rather it proceeds continuously and stepwise in school. The significance of continuity in language supervision of the child going from kindergarten to school shall be taken into intensified account through current measures and projects.
